Multi-hop VPN is a security feature that routes a user's internet traffic through multiple VPN servers before reaching its final destination, providing an additional layer of security and privacy.
Simply put, multi-hop provides extra security and privacy for users by making it far more difficult for third parties to track a user's encrypted and fragmented online activities, as shown in the graphic below:
Multi-Hop benefits
Enhanced privacy Routing traffic through multiple servers makes it more difficult for an observer to trace data back to a user, as each server only knows the IP address of a previous hop, adding an extra layer of disguise.
Increased security Multi-hop adds an extra layer of security against attackers because they must breach encryption across all servers rather than just one since your data is still encrypted through the additional hops.
Censorship bypass Multi-hop VPNs are particularly useful in regions with strict censorship and surveillance, as they are far more effective at bypassing strict surveillance and traffic blocking.
The Pros and Cons
Speed vs. privacy Multi-Hop provides additional security, but at some expense of internet speed, as routing through multiple servers may slow a user's connection due to increased resource usage.
Large data Users looking for regional bypassing with handling of large data will need to test and decide whether to switch off multi-hop for faster speeds, or count on longer, more secure, but slower downloads.
Ideal user profiles Multi-Hop will be most appealing to high-risk profiles, such as journalists or users in politically oppressed areas, or users involved in sensitive transactions, such as financial and NDA contractors.
